How do I get a Job on a Cruise Ship - In order for you to be considered for a Cruise Ship Job Interview, your cover letter needs to stand out from the others. You've probably heard this before. If there are two cover letters side by side that were in the same way qualified, how will the recruitment team choose from them?
There are a number of ways to make your cover letter have an advantage over other applicants, but a simple trick will increase your chances of getting hired.
The mission statement of the cruise line you are applying to may even help you get hired if you understand it well. Each cruise line expects that their crew members will show excellence in guest service which ultimately leads to repeat passengers. It will give you an advantage if you include exceptional keywords from cruise line mission statements into your cover letter.
Most are guest service promises of what they offer their guests is what the cruise line mission statement contains, similar to a company objective.
For example, Holland America Line's mission statement is, "Through excellence we create once-in-a-lifetime experiences, every time." Alternatively, Canard’s trademark is "Impeccable Canard White Star Service."
These types of statement are what cruise ship job seekers should incorporate into their cover letters to establish their commitment to specific cruise companies. Also, remember to change your cover letter with every cruise line that you apply to.
Another tip is to add your photo to your cruise ship job application. A picture is worth 1,000 words, but do those words work in your favor when it comes to attaching a photo on your cruise ship resume.
Several USA recruiters of land-based jobs advise against attaching a photo. They imply that it will lead to discrimination; insertion of photos can really work against the applicant. Nevertheless, for Europeans the inclusion of a photograph with a job application has been usual for years.
So what should a cruise applicant do, include or not include?
It is in fact encouraged to follow the practice of including a photo with your resume, even though many of the cruise lines have their head offices based in the USA. In particular, as specified by the online applications of the large cruise companies for cruise positions for example cruise staff, youth counselors and other entertainment positions need to include a photo.
Cruise applicants should bear in mind that their application should be promoting their skills and experience and so they should not lose focus of this. It is just giving you and additional advantage having a picture in a particularly -competitive industry.
Personalizing your resume, your picture must be a professional representation of yourself. Employers aren't critiquing your looks, rather they want to see a confident smile. Also, clothing has to be suitable; something you would wear to a job interview. An alternate photo would be one that shows you "in action" at work.
Cruise ship jobs offer amazing opportunities for young people starting out in the workforce or for older people with experience and skills in certain fields.
What a better place to work than on a cruise ship? You can have an exciting career that pays well while traveling the world in a job that takes you to where the good weather is. If you're lucky you can spend your winter months working in the Caribbean and the summer months in Alaska. You can see different countries and meet new people on each cruise that you work.
There are many benefits to cruise ship jobs not the least of which is traveling to exciting places and getting paid for it!
· You can make a significant amount of money in a short period of time and be able to save a large chunk of that money. How? All of your expenses are covered while you are working. The cruise company for which you work takes care of your room and board, medical care, and your travel to and from the port, not matter where you live.
· Cruise ship employees from some countries aren't required to pay income taxes if they work for a cruise line not based in their home country.
· You can get discounted cruise rates for family members.
· Free medical insurance is provided.
Cruise ship jobs are great summer jobs for students to earn money for college and get a great break between classes.
Since a cruise ship is really a combination ship and hotel, there are hundreds of employment opportunities. The people who work on a cruise ship fall into two general categories: those who operate and sail the ship and those staff who in some way provide service to or entertain the passengers.
Here are some tips on how to apply for and get cruise ship jobs.
-· Apply for particular jobs rather than sending an application in requesting any position.
-· Find out as much as you can about the particular cruise line for which you are applying before you go for an interview.
-· Be sure to write a thorough resume and cover letter.
If you are offered a position, you will be given a contract for 6 months, which you can extend to ten months. At the end of the contract, a break of 6 to 8 weeks is required. Good employees will then be offered another contract.
Let's start with where you should apply if you are looking for a cruise ship job.
Cruise Recruitment Companies: There are a few specialist recruitment companies that are specifically for connecting cruise companies and job seekers - and this is a great place to start. They already have the connections with the cruise lines and will be able to give you advice on how to present yourself in the best possible light.
Cruise Ship Companies: There is nothing wrong with approaching the cruise lines directly. In fact, a lot of them prefer this and have a section of their websites dedicated to available jobs and how to apply. So find the companies that have cruises in an area that you are interested in traveling too and see what jobs they have on offer.
Employment Websites: While not always having many cruise jobs available, the major employment websites are always good to check on - just in case they have some jobs on their site.
These are the 3 main avenues that you will need to find and get a cruise job, but if you are looking for a tip on how to maximize your chances of employment there is one piece of advice that I will give you.
Provide as much information on your qualifications and talents as possible.
The cruise lines are always wanting people who can do multiple tasks, and the more you let them know that you can do - the better the chance that they will employ you.
Christmas and New Year’s Eve on a Cruise Ship
Christmas Decoration: While the ships are being decorated with Trees and Gingerbread houses for the guests, there is not much decoration in the crew quarters. If you like to have Christmas decoration in your cabin, on most ships you can do so - however, please follow the rules on that.
Most ships require that the chain of blinking lights and the likes are checked by the ship’s electrician before you can put them up. This is not to give you a hard time, but to do minimize hazards.
Celebrating Christmas and the New Year: All ships I know will have a Christmas dinner for the Crew. Most offer religious services of some kind. If Christmas is important to you, I recommend you become part of the Crew Welfare committee to actively participate. There is normally a crew party held on New Year’s Eve - however unless the ship is docked somewhere overnight in port, you most likely will not see a firework, while working at sea.
